Frequently asked questions
Find practical answers to common questions about caring for your septic system.
Pumping and maintenance
Understand the parts of your system and when it may need service.
The main components of a septic system are:
- The septic tank
- Pump tank and pump
- Drain field
- Inlet and/or outlet baffles
- Filters
Your septic tank should generally be pumped every 8-20 years. If it needs pumping in less than 8 years, it could be due to heavy disposal usage or frequent antibacterial use.
System access
Know what to expect when locating your septic tank.
Each septic tank has 1-5 lids that allow access. The lids may be raised to grade or slightly below the surface and need to be exposed.
Drain-field care
Protect the system and avoid unnecessary maintenance.
We recommend not using a garbage disposal with a septic system. It can dramatically affect the amount of scum and sludge produced and increase your need for pumping.
We recommend not building or landscaping over any part of your drain field or septic system. These actions can cause costly damage.
